What Happens During the Procedure
A topical numbing cream is applied to the penis. Once the area is desensitized — roughly 15 minutes — your provider injects 100 units of botulinum toxin into the corpus cavernosum, the two spongy chambers that fill with blood to produce an erection.
The toxin works at the nerve-muscle junction: it blocks the release of norepinephrine, a neurotransmitter that contracts the smooth muscle lining these chambers.
